There are 7 Deadly Sins and 7 Contrary, Heavenly Virtues corresponding to each individual sin: lust, Chastity; greed, Generosity; gluttony, Temperance; envy, Kindness; anger, Meekness; pride, Humility; and sloth, Diligence. Focus on the virtues which overcome the sins. All other sins stem from one or more Deadly Sins, and the development of Heavenly Virtues is an effective paradigm to sainthood.
“For all that is in the world, sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life, is not from the Father but is from the world.” (1 John 2:16)
Saint John presents three basic types of sin: sensual lust — lust, gluttony and sloth; enticement for the eyes — greed; and a pretentious life — envy, anger and pride.
Chastity would help us to avoid a lustful world conducive, for instance, to adultery, rape and passion homicide.
Generosity should excel in materialistic America where wealth is obnoxiously concentrated in 1% of the population.
Temperance prevents excessive gratification, for instance, in eating and drinking. Temperance is the ability to control unreasonable gratification.
Kindness, unbiased love, overcomes the sin of envy, which causes a rift in our relationships with God and our neighbor. Consider that God blesses His children in different ways and examine the blessings He has bestowed upon you.
Meekness overcomes anger. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.” (Matthew 5:5) The land means the Kingdom of God. Don’t get upset and consumed with trivia because envy and resentment may turn you literally sick. If you cannot be patient you may become a patient.
Humility would have prevented Lucifer’s rebellion against God and Humanity’s living woes. “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 14:11) America generally claims that Wall Street abounds in greed and in urgent need of humility.
Diligence helps us to fulfill our duties and to cultivate work ethics. We should develop our talents rather than allowing sloth to undermine them. We should diligently seek help to treat clinical depression which is conducive to sloth.
